A cancer diagnosis and other crises can plunge you into deep darkness. Suddenly, you can’t see anything! But with the Bible in your hand, the light of God's word can illumine and overcome the darkness.
At the start of my own cancer journey, I had never been so afraid. Talk about being afraid of the dark! I had no idea what to expect. What would I do? Would I survive?
The Bible says, “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path" (Psalm 119:105) Thanks be to God I read my Bible often. I reflected, remembered, relied on it, and God's light shined!
Sometimes the light came as a single word I whispered to myself as I waited at the hospital. Other times it arrived as I read and reflected on a longer passage in my devotional time. Every time, God’s word gave me light – guiding, comforting, healing light.
The Bible enabled me to see Jesus Christ with me, the “light of the world” (John 8:12) and experience his hope and healing. In him, there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5)! Even the darkness of cancer cannot overcome the light of Christ.
At the start of this new year, make reading the Bible a part of every day. Strive to let "Let the word of God dwell in you richly” (Colossians 3:16). I am enjoying and being tremendously blessed by Nicky Gumble's Bible In One Year.

Finally, I want to share this excerpt from HCCM, chapter one on courage (pages 11-12). The pages I read for you will powerfully illustrate the difference the Bible made in my life and can make in your life.
